Blog: When did you last evaluate your time?

Have you stopped to think about where and how you spend your time lately? Many people are so busy with workloads and to-do lists that they don’t have time to evaluate the relevance and efficiency of their time use. This can lead to unnecessary work and fragmentation of focus, often resulting in inefficiency even though the workload may seem large. When tired and overloaded, time and energy are easily wasted on messing around, making mistakes and correcting them – time that could be better spent. The result is more tasks, stress and rush, and the squirrel wheel only gets faster if you don’t stop and take a good look at the situation.

Stop early and plan your time management
Responsible workers may go through their entire careers without stopping to assess their own needs, but for most people the limits of their ability to cope come earlier. In many cases, it is only at the limit, when overwork or exhaustion sets in, that stretching becomes impossible. Holiday or sick leave may offer a moment of distance, but too much fatigue can prevent you from using this break to examine your daily life and work.

The less time or resources you feel you have, the more important it is to stop and think: how can you adapt your own activities and working conditions to make work more productive and maintain your well-being? The time spent in assessment and conscious planning will pay off many times over, for example in terms of increased job satisfaction and wellbeing, and more efficient use of time.

Towards a balanced and empowered daily life
The wise person prepares in advance and plans their working time so that they can focus on the essentials and use their time wisely. The aim is to achieve a balance between mental and physical wellbeing, a balance between work and leisure, and a balance between different aspects of life. This enables people to feel that they are living a meaningful life in line with their values, to find joy in their work and to enjoy life.

Sometimes it takes major changes, new insights and a change of direction to achieve a life of one’s own and the right balance. Sometimes small adjustments in action and thinking are enough. One of the most important questions to ask is: What is valuable to me in life and how does this manifest itself in my time management? Do I live for work, or is work part of life, with room for other important things?

When was the last time you stopped to think about these questions? What is important to you and how does it show up in your daily life?

If you need a counsellor, advice or therapy, I would be happy to help you stop and look at your life and find ways to live a balanced and fulfilling life, just for you.
